The National Park Galichica is situated on Galichica mountain which belongs to the Shara - Pind system of mountains. The National Park was designated, on the Macedonian part of the mountain by the Parliament of Republic of Macedonia in October 1958, because of the particulary natural beautis, landscapes and estetical values, extraordinary richfull endemic flora and fauna.
The Park is situated between two biggest Macedonian lakes, Ohrid and Prespa, having the meridian direction of streching. Its area is 227 squar km. The lowest point is the level of Ohrid Lake - 695 m, and Prespa Lake - 850 m, and the higest is 2265 m above the see level.
A basic geological foundation of Galichica is its major part of Paleozoik massive metamorf silicates covered with layers of massive limestones in the thicknes of 500 - 550 m with a spongy structure and a strong porous.
The messif has a very developed relief with a large and deep ravines, and a wide mountain crest which in its southern part is with the high of 2000 m. Such a relief, and the clossnes of the Ohrid and Prespa lake is anabling the visitor, for the whole time of the visit of the National Park, to have an extraordinary long and beautiful visual experience. The mountain Galichica hes a moderate temperate continental climate, which is under the influence of the large quantity of water in the Ohrid and Prespa lake, and the warm submediteranian influences, which are penetrating through the relatively low mountain saddles in Albania.
Beside the outstanding natural beauties and estetical values, Galichica is caracterized that represents an area with ecological integration of higher order with still well preserved natural floral life in perticular ecosystems.
The floral life in the National Park Galichica is represented with over 1000 species, of which large number of relicts and endems have the final frontier of its range exactly on the mountain Galichica. There is characteristicaly presence of up to now 11 discovered local endems to be met exclusively on the slopes of Galichica and nowhere else, which give a clear evidence of the specifically floristic composition of this mountain. It should be emphasized that at the moment its intensively worked on the flora of the National Park and there are indication that the number of endems will be even bigger.
The fauna of Galichica is also rich and diverse. There is no exact number of invertebrata species. Vertebrata are represented with 170 species of which 10 amphibian, 18 reptiles, 124 birds and 18 mamals.
In order to provide an adeqvate protection of the nature in the National Park, beside the National regulation ( Low for protection in National Park, Low for protection and inprovment of environment and nature and Low for protection of Ohrid, Prespa and Dojran lake ) and the decrees applicable of the convention for protection of the world cultural and natural heritage, because, part of litoral zone together with City of Ohrid and Ohrid Lake is registered in the list of world cultural and natural heritage by UNESCO, under "Ohrid^,s natural and curtural-historical area".
