Notes: Keep away if horses on the landing area. The hors owners can be very angry
if you scare their horses.

Additional Notes: Very good for the begeners and their first flights, because of the wide grassy lending filds. For advanced pilots this site is the best for Cross Country flying in Macedonia. Hotels and private rooms only 1Km from take off.

To arrive at the start on Vodno, ask for the State Hospital, and just continue up the main
ascending road.
-Landing at 250m at the edge of the town, and 400m at near village NEREZI.
-Radio frequency: R4 (145700)
-Best flying period from April to October;
PERFECT flying along 10km ridge very near to the town, and still very safe. When N winds are blowing, in the middle of the day, stronger conditions can be expected for PG, but perfect for HG.However when the thermals are cooling down in the afternoon, smooth soaring until the sun goes down is usual. Flying to the end of the ridge 6 km to the west and back, is possible on all days with a north-wind . In thermaling, it is easy to fly across the city or continue to the next steep ridge (see OSOY)
Notes:
-Flying over the high mountains (up to 2540m), behind,
to the south is not recommended except for very experienced pilots ; collecting is
difficult
-Avoid flying directly over the city in stronger N winds.
-NO flying in strong West winds. Rotor!

Popova
Shapka
Take the E65 road to TETOVO town. Enter the town and DRIVE CAREFULLY-give way to everybody;
ask for directions to the winter center POPOVA SAPKA (easy to find), the start is 20
km from Tetovo. From the Hotel “Popova Sapka” take the dirt road (any car) which
continues round to the left past a newly built church and across the start of a ski lift.
Then head for the big transmitter antenna, visiable from everywhere.

EVALUATION: Excellent!

General info:
-Winter ski centre;
-HG/PG
-with 4wdrive, and in winter time with cable car, start at 2500m;
-asphalt to the 1700m and 3km dirt track to the recommended 1650m
start.
-accomodation: several hotels, but recommended place is mountain
house-refuge “YELAK” at the other side of the mountain, cheap, spectacular
views, 30 min hike or 10min with 4WD or stronger car;( ask for directions at the hotels)
-fly time: all year;
-best time: spring (punchy thermals); summer (strong XC weather);
autumn (relaxed afternoon flying)
Landing 450m, big fields everywhere in the valley;
Radio frequency: R5 (145725 MHz)
TYPE OF FLYING:
Mostly thermaling. On many days +11 is usual. Very good for beginners,
early and late in the day, pleasant 30 min descent. XC flight is possible 20km right to
the town of GOSTIVAR and more for experienced pilots; an 10 - 15 km to the left. Stop at
the last peak of the mountain (easy so see, at 2500m)- the border is close and
serbian border soldiers are not the kind of people you want to mess with!
Usually a West wind (from behind the mountain) and because the start is about 1500m
there is almost always good wind, and no problem until a height of 2500-3000m ascent.
Poslible turbulence at that altitude, because of the general West Adriatic wind.
NOTE:
-If some other wind than East, flying over the valley from the first
start can be a little turbulent.
-Land near to the main road (highway) - easy for pick up and further
from the hostile landowners (usually no problem).
-In case of landing over the border on the serbian side (DO NOT DO IT!)
- possible troubles from the serbian soldiers - call/alert your nearest ambasy at BELGRADE
or SKOPJE; or call civill air trafic at Skopje phone:____________ and explain. They
will deal with it.
THINGS TO DO WHEN NOT FLYING:
-Hiking to the waterfalls of LESHNICA, 2,5h to the upper and 3,5h
to the lower ones, outstanding scenery - dont miss it.
-Hike to one of the highest points in Macedonia 2744m “TITO’S
PEAK” (4h);
-Also possible mountain biking to the same places - recommended!
-Skiing in the winter - ask at the rescue center for info and dont be
discouraged by the impolite staff, if there is somebody present.

DESTINATION:
From SKOPJE, take the highway to Athens (E75), at the interchange at
the town VELES, take the main local road (27) to town SHTIP, and continue to KOCHANI.
Two sites to visit near KOCHANI:
-National Park PONIKVA and PLACKOVIZA mountain(1700m) but 4WD
or stronger car nessery. Flying at the second site is superb afternoon flying (West side).
Longer XC flights are possible in any normal weather.
-The best way to fly is to contact local club "MOSQITO";
helpful members will info, guide to the start and probably fly with you, at least the frst
day.

Ask for the nearby artificial lake MATKA(very beautiful place, DONT
miss seeing it), and just after the first village, at the steepest ascent, notice the
military site, and take the right turn. After 7km of narrow but very good asphalt, road
ends up with a closed gate. Take the marked walk route right from the road, and after
15min. a small start (under construction) will appear. HELI CLUB have provided a carpet
cover on the start.

-Landing anywhere in a big flat area at 500m;
-Highest point 1300m;
-20 km from Skopje center;
-Steep 30 km ridge, possible 8km flight East, and 40km XC Flight West;
-15min hike from the end of the asphalt road;
-Best time of the year: Feb. to Now. Every north-wind day.
TYPE OF FLYING:
Expect stronger conditions when NORTH wind, and dificulties while landing, because the landing place is one big thermal generator. Strong thermals up to 9, and lifting up to 2500m and more. However, conditions slow down at the afternoon. Experience pilots can easy make XC to the West, but be very careful at the end of the ridge which is a little further back and lower. The whole area becomes little higher at the bottom. Very high altitude is necessary to fly over and infront of this place. The ridge continues more than 60 kms South

The most frequent flying site is Krusevo (see Krusevo) at 30km from the
town of Prilep. But there are a few very good flying places worth visiting near to Prilep
like TRESKAVEC(1400m), OLD CASTLE OF KING MARKO(900m), SELECKA mountain(1400m) near the
village Mariovo, and more. Flying is mostly thermaling, sometimes stronger, but usually
with no problems.
The best way to find and fly there is to contact the nearby sports airfield. The helpful staff will show you and guide you to the places.

NOTE: Around Prilep you can find the most beautiful mountains for any kind of flying. But there is no asphalt road. Only strong 4WD vehicals can rich top of mountains.
